I’m consulting to a company called siteEDGE Agency, who has the VFW, (aka Veterans of Foreign Wars) as one of their clients.
Until working with them, my impression of the VFW was of old World War II veterans in garrison caps who march in parades, and conduct the Memorial Day services at the cemetery every year. My dad is a Veteran of a Foreign War (Vietnam), but I don’t think he was ever in the VFW.
After working with them, I’ve now come to realize the VFW is really doing a lot of things to reach out to the community, and the public at large could really benefit if they only knew about it.
With that in mind, two projects that I think you’ll find very valuable are:
Honor A Vet and Win
This is a contest where ANYONE can create a 3 minute video honoring a Veteran of their choice, and possibly win one of several prizes worth thousands of dollars, including a trip to Orlando! I’m really excited to see what kind of videos get submitted to honor our soldiers and veterans. This contest just launched to the public this week, and the deadline for entry is November 3rd, 2007, so hurry and enter! Click here for more info
Did you know the VFW gives away $3.4 MILLION in scholarships to kids every year? I didn’t either. There is a writing/essay contest for students in 6th through 8th grade, and an oral/speaking contest for kids in 9th through 12th grade, and you don’t have to be a member of the VFW to win. Top prize is a $30,000 scholarship! If you have a kids in this age range, click here for more info!
