Recently, a business colleague asked how to better expose the value of his brand by being seen as an expert in his field.
This is a great question…and a great strategy to consider.
Regardless of whether you are an independent professional, or work in a big company, there are many benefits to being known as an “Expert”. The better your expert status, the more you will see increased job opportunities, clients, promotions, and respect from your peers.
But how can you become known as an expert?
Here are just a few ideas and resources to get you started:
#1 Online networking – Increase your presence on social networking sites such as LinkedIn and MySpace. Maximize these tools by growing your networks as big as you can with people who know, like, and trust you. It will also help you be found in the search engines, where your personalized profile can project the kind of image you want people to see.
#2 Write articles – The more articles you have out there, the more people will consider you an expert. This applies to offline or online media outlets. Find well-read websites, magazines, trade journals, newsletters, etc. in your target industry, and write as many useful and informative articles for them as you can.
#3 Be quoted in the press – This is huge, as people who are quoted in the press get INSTANT credibility. (A great resource for getting quoted in the press is PR Leads, which can provide you access to reporters for big publications such as Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and more.)
#4 Conduct Teleseminars and Webinars – By conducting classes in your topic to a global audience, your status as an expert will increase, as will your business. Don’t do a “promotional” event where you are trying to sell the audience something. Simply share your knowledge, and the business will come. (Check out Conference Call University for examples)
#5 Speak at events – Being accepted as a speaker at a conference or seminar elevates your expert status substantially. Usually, you don’t get paid for your service, but the new business you can develop more than compensates you for your time and energy. Contact the trade associations or event promoters in your target industry, and find out what opportunities there are for you. To round up additional gigs, I highly recommend SpeakerMatch.
#6 Write a book – You can write a book focused on your area of expertise. It doesn’t have to be a best-seller, but it does have to be a “real” book. When you add “author” to your resume or business card, your expert status will skyrocket, and the benefits will be long lasting!
These are just a few thoughts I came up with off the top of my head. I’m sure there are many other great ways to become known as expert. If you have other ideas on how to become known as an expert in your field, please feel free to share them by clicking the “Comments” link below right..
